Lamar Band Update

Consolidation – The band staff is making an effort to consolidate our communication online during this instructional period. The district mandates that assignments are posted on Canvas. Therefore, all assignments for the band will be posted there. Other communication will be via the Band App. We will NO LONGER USE REMIND. I have been phasing out Remind since July and with recent issues on Monday and this morning, I am no longer using Remind. We will still send emails through our Charms database and post on the Lamar Band News. Please check out www.lamarmusic.org for some updates.

Band Coursework – Many of our assignments are recorded performances by students. This can be done a number of ways. We can record to Smart Music or Charms. You could also record and upload in Canvas. Guard students will have video assignments that can be uploaded to Canvas or the Facebook page like we have done in the past. We very much like Smart Music as it tells the teacher how much time students spend practicing, not just recording.

Smart Music – In order to use the software, you need to create a SmartMusic account and join the class using this code: Z6LEF-WA4AC.

  1. Open a Chrome browser and visit: https://admin.smartmusic.com/join
  2. When prompted for a class code, please enter:

Football Season – Arlington ISD and Rangers reach agreement for AISD to play football games at Globe Life Park https://www.dallasnews.com/high-school-sports/football/2020/04/17/arlington-isd-and-rangers-reach-agreement-for-aisd-to-play-football-games-at-globe-life-park/

Online Student Leadership Training – Leadership University is the source of instruction for our future leaders. 33+ students have already started and we had a great Zoom meeting last week. If you are joining late, or missed an exercise, catch up here. All of this material is required for students wanting to audition for a leadership position next school year. You must also join the

Band App Group for Future Leaders.

Lamar Band Weekly Announcements 4/11/2020

Lamar Band Classes – We are working on purposeful assignments for our classes. The district will begin elective coursework on April 20th. Until then, just practice your instrument and keep up with your other classes. Get up and get active every day. Take a walk, do some crunches, or a little yoga. We are excited about what we will be doing with the band online and looking forward to an amazing marching band season!

April 13 Instrument Pickup – 3:00-4:30 at the MAIN OFFICE of Lamar HS. When you arrive, if you can, put a piece of paper with your name in the front windshield. Stay in the car until we signal where your instrument is to be picked up. If you missed the initial sign up, I have permission to add more names to our official list. Fill out this form so that you may get your instrument.

Online School Hours – On Monday core content classes will begin instruction with our new class schedule. I have attached the explanation of many questions. It is important students are working during the scheduled times as that is when the teachers are available to help or may be giving a lecture on the Zoom app.

Optional Upgrades – I have had students ask about microphones for recording assignments as the built in computer mics are very low quality. I found a few options. These are only optional and not having one will in no way affect your grades on recorded assignments. I have also suggested nice headphone upgrades. Studio style headphones have a much clearer range of response compared to earbuds or non studio style options.

Best cheap option for a microphone upgrade

Best USB tabletop microphone upgrade

Best instrument clip on microphone upgrade

Best cheap option for a studio quality headphone upgrade

Smart Music – We are going to use the SmartMusic software for the class Free Lamar Band 2020.

In order to use the software, you need to create a SmartMusic account and join the class using this code: Z6LEF-WA4AC.

1. Open a Chrome browser and visit: https://admin.smartmusic.com/join

2. When prompted for a class code, please enter:

If you already created an account, you need to switch to this one. It is the full free account code: Z6LEF-WA4AC

Online Leadership Courses – These courses are posted in the Band App. There are a couple of other really great opportunities focused more on drum majors. Anybody that thinks they might want to be a drum major one day should check them out. All info is on this new page.

Lamar Band Weekly Announcements

Dear Parents, Guardians, Friends, and Families,

I hope you are healthy and taking all precautions to keep everyone out of harm’s way.

The unprecedented and abrupt closure of school has left everyone, teachers included, with more questions than we have answers. The situation is fluid and changing day by day, but rest assured that we are working hard to continue your child’s education (music and otherwise) with as little disruption as possible.

As our school and district work their way through the uncertainty, please know that I will continue to communicate information, not just as it relates to our program, but as it relates to the entire school community. We know that our program has long been a trusted source of information, and we promise to honor that trust moving forward.

As we work through the complexities of an online instructional world, I hope that you will take some time every day to create or listen to some music each and every day. Music has been shown to lower stress and anxiety levels, and if there is EVER a time when we need our stress levels reduced, it is now!

Lastly, you have all heard me say that our program is more than a class — it’s a family. And families help one another. If there is anything I can do to be of service during these difficult times, I stand ready, able, and willing.

Hang in there, and if possible, remind your child to practice every once in a while. If nothing else, it will get them out from under your feet and off electronics for a little while.

Stay safe, and I will be in touch as more information becomes available.

Sincerely,

Alan Lang

Lamar Band Classes – On April 20th, the band will start up again! We will have our first recording assignment announced on that day. Make sure you have Smart Music and your instrument. We will also be announcing the marching band show and sending out music. We already have the percussion parts for the first minute of the show! You will be getting a LOT of information in the next few days regarding the class schedule and how things will work starting on the 13th. Until we officially are allowed to assign homework for band classes, just play your instrument and enjoy music.

Instrument Pick Up #2 – This is the final opportunity to pick up instruments. Next Monday April 13th from 3:00pm-4:30pm at the MAIN OFFICE at LHS. You must fill out this information or you will not receive your instrument. https://forms.gle/sFA9NZwu7FRCuZjS7

I am sending a new unit every MWF. These are videos followed by a little google worksheet. I encourage ALL students to participate. I encourage students to get an early start if they don’t get too busy with other homework next week. These courses are posted in the Band App.

Quote of the Week – I thought I’d mix it up. I saw this poem on my aunt’s facebook. Though it was cool, I decided to fact check on Snopes.com. Social media recently said it was written by Kathleen O’Mara in 1869 and published during the 1918 Spanish Flu epidemic. It was actually written this past March by Catherine M. O’Meara.

“And the people stayed home.

And they read books, and listened, and rested, and exercised, and made art, and played games, and learned new ways of being, and were still.

And they listened more deeply. Some meditated, some prayed, some danced. Some met their shadows. And the people began to think differently.

And the people healed.

And, in the absence of people living in ignorant, dangerous, mindless, and heartless ways, the earth began to heal.

And when the danger passed, and the people joined together again, they grieved their losses, and made new choices, and dreamed new images, and created new ways to live and heal the earth fully, as they had been healed.”

Lamar Band Update

Online Learning and Leadership – The band staff has been busy, but not as busy as the Lamar administration. There are many meetings and projects going on everyday. Online learning takes off on April 13th. The fine arts content is scheduled to begin on the 20th. That being said, we have a lot of supplemental things to keep the Lamar Band strong. Students should practice often and using the new free Smart Music account is a truly fun way to do so. There are many student leadership training opportunities. I am sending out Leadership University courses every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday starting this week. These are posted in the band app. The band council had a Zoom meeting yesterday and you might be hearing from leaders about having zoom meetings and maybe even a tik tok challenge in the near future. Finally, on Monday, we had a very productive design staff meeting. The 2020 marching band show is well underway and will be announced on April 20th. We plan on having about 2 mins of music for everyone at that time. Stay healthy Lamar Band and help out around the house.

Lamar Band Weekly Announcements

Update – I wish I had all the answers, or news regarding school opening again, but I do not. I can tell you Mr. Hagman and the faculty are working hard on getting prepared for in depth online learning. There are many phases already planned. As of now, fine arts online education will start April 20th if we are still in this shelter in place mode. We get updates every day from Mr. Hagman by email and we have Zoom faculty meetings on Mondays and Thursdays. The most important thing right now is that every student has access to a computer and internet. I hope that all of the Lamar Band students have their instruments at home. If not, do not worry, there will not be graded work that requires an instrument at this time. I don’t see that happening. I would not worry one second about grades in fine arts classes. We are looking for enriching activities to keep your skills strong. Right now we have two things listed below that will be great and are FREE while the virus has us at home.

Most importantly I hope that all of the Lamar Band families are safe and healthy. This is a challenging time, but I know The Pride of Lamar is ready for it. We face challenges and adversity all the time in music. We work through difficult times and we do it together as a team. Lets keep that mindset as we move forward. Please contact me with anything. Just contact me to chat! I have the time!

SmartMusic – This music service has been around for a long time. It is usually a pricey subscription, but now they are offering it free for every student and teacher around the world. For a while, the Lamar Band recorded assignments on this software. I am excited to use this again. For now, I just want every Lamar Band student to sign up and set up their account. It is a lot of fun. For instance, you can pick a piece of music you like, and often it is available for you to play it and have the other band parts playing along with you. I assigned Bayou Breakdown for fun already. It also has MANY solos on here for you to play and listen to the piano part. Here is the sign up info:

We are going to use the SmartMusic software for the class Lamar HS Band.

In order to use the software, you need to create a SmartMusic account and join the class using this code: R2ZYT-HNMLY.

  1. Open a Chrome browser and visit: https://admin.smartmusic.com/join
  2. When prompted for a class code, please enter:

R2ZYT-HNMLY

Thank you, and I look forward to helping you improve your practice with SmartMusic!

Student Leadership Courses – There is a great online student leadership course that is now available free. I signed up the Lamar Band and the first day will be Monday. I will send an email and Band App message with the content. ALL band members are encouraged to participate in this course. It will be valuable information for any students interested in leadership auditions for the fall. https://www.leaderoftheband.org/

Get Exercise – Since we get PE credit in marching band, I think it is important for us to work on our physical health as a band. Mr. Riley will be sharing some ideas in the near future. Most likely it will be on the Band App.

Communication – We will continue to communicate with Remind and the Band App. Twitter, Facebook and Instagram will also be good sources of info. I always retweet important info from AISD, Lamar, City of Arlington, and Tarrant County on my Lamar Viking twitter account.

Band App – We are encouraging students and parents to join the Band App https://band.us/n/abaa28ofT5zcr This is a great way for us to communicate as a supplement to the Remind app. Keep notifications on for both app services.

Lamar Band Update

Lamar Leadership – This morning Mr. Hagman hosted faculty meetings on the Zoom app. It was interesting to see all the teachers from their homes. I felt that it is important for you to know that the administrators are working around the clock, or at least late into the evenings, to find the answers to all the questions we all have. The district is working on a variety of plans for instruction. The main focus right now is that we are taking care of the Lamar family. Making sure students get meals and making sure that if needed, all students would have a computer and internet access. As I find out more information, I will share it in email and the band app. As for the Lamar Band, I would like the leadership students to reach out to your sections to see if they have what they need. The directors helped students get instruments on Tuesday for those that didn’t have anything at home. As of now, there are no assignments for band. We just want people to enjoy music and play their instruments.

Lamar Band Weekly Announcements

Extended Spring Break – I expected to open my computer for the first time this week to write about the exciting week ahead. Instead, I am writing about our extra two weeks off. Watching the news or going to the busy grocery store can be a little unsettling. The important thing to remember is that we as a community are taking precautions to prevent as much of the spread as possible.

Here is what I know as of now:

  1. As of now, all band practices are canceled for the next two weeks.
  2. Pastapalooza is cancelled.
  3. The NTCA winterguard championships and WGI are cancelled.
  4. The UTA Jazz festival has been cancelled.

Here is what I do NOT know as of now:

  1. Pre-UIL
  2. UIL for HS or JH bands
  3. Car Wash
  4. Future concerts at Lamar this semester

Music Education – The one thing I do want everyone to do is to listen to music. Music will keep us grounded and together. Listen to band music. Listen to orchestral music. Listen to a variety of styles of music every day. Of course students, we want you to practice. We have not been given specific expectations regarding online learning yet, but we want you to practice and be ready to play your assignments online for grades over the next two weeks.

Communication – We will continue to communicate with Remind and the Band App. Twitter, Facebook and Instagram will also be good sources of info. I always retweet important info from AISD, Lamar, City of Arlington, and Tarrant County on my Lamar Viking twitter account.
