Friday and Saturday Nights – This time of year, Friday and Saturday are filled with football games and marching contests. This upcoming weekend is a rare opportunity for the Lamar band to have both Friday and Saturday free. If you look at the calendar, we are pretty busy on the weekends until we get to November. I for one am very excited about the busy schedule. Marching season is so much fun! I want everyone to get excited about our biggest contest of the fall, The Bands of America Waco Regional Championship. https://marching.musicforall.org/event/waco19/ The Lamar band has never attended at BOA event. We are excited to compete in this national marching band circuit. It is a higher level of competition than the USBands contests we have typically attended over the past few years. Uniform – On Wednesday we will have our final formal uniform fitting day.
Meals Before Football Games – The booster club is working on providing a meal option for students so they can stay on campus after school. It costs approximately $5 per student. The first game we will provide this service will be Sept 20th. We have a very tight schedule but I want students to have a meal before the game. Passing Classes – We are about to hit the halfway point for the first six weeks of the school year. Students must take grades into their own hands. Check on student self serve often. If you don’t have this set up yet, please do so immediately. https://www.aisd.net/students/student-self-serve/
Band objectives have been assigned for this first six weeks and some of it is past due. Students will have some opportunities in class to take care of these “pass-offs”. Some of the assignments can be recorded on Charms and submitted electronically. If a grade is a zero in the band gradebook, this simply means the student missed the due date. It can still be pass-off before the end of the six weeks. Students that are proactive with their time management and personal calendars will be most successful.
Videos and Files – We use videos of our performances as study material. We are still looking for a parent who will take videos at football games. They will meet a director during the first quarter for information on getting into the pressbox filming deck. School Supplies – Here are some of the items that band students will need. Mechanical pencils, a 1” three ring binder for music, sheet protectors, a box of reeds, valve oil, and other equipment specific items. Brass and woodwinds must also purchase a flip book and lyre from the music store. https://goo.gl/WZ4yzs You may need to take your instrument to a music store so they can help you acquire the correct size / brand of lyre (the attachment that holds the flip folder). You will need a total of at least 10 flip book pages.
After School Rehearsal – After school marching band practices are co-curricular rehearsals. These are mandatory and absences will be considered in the class grade. We will rehearse 3:30-6:00 on Monday & Thursday, and 3:30-6:30 on Tuesday. We will have Wednesday rehearsals if Monday is a holiday or other event. Students must arrive at least 15 mins early and stay approximately 15 after to do their job moving equipment to and from our rehearsal area. Parents/guardians, make sure to schedule doctors appointments on Wednesday afternoons. We will rarely have practice on those days. SAT & ACT test dates to avoid – Band students must plan around the fall marching contests for their standardized tests. We have a marching contest on the Nov. 2nd SAT test date. DO NOT TEST THIS DATE! The national test dates are on the band calendar. Please make sure and avoid conflicts. To learn all the other options for testing, google search the ACT or SAT test dates.
Physicals & Forms – All band forms are past due. The most critical is that the medical authorization form being notarized. You must have an ID and wait to sign when you are with the notary. All other forms must be completely filled out and signed before turning them in. Physicals are past due and mandatory for students to participate in band. Students can not perform with the band without forms on file.
