We Officially Begin 2019-2020 – On Monday, we will officially start the school year. However, we are well on our way with the marching band season. Already so many hours of practice, volunteering, and even performing! Can you believe we have already put in approximately 96 hours of practice? We only have about 88 hours of after school practice left! As I begin year 15 at LHS and year 19 of my teaching career, one thing stands out with this iteration of the Lamar Band…grit. Yes, it’s a buzz word these days, but years ago I read the book by education researcher Angela Duckworth titled Grit. It’s a dynamic concept that I think deserves more attention than your average buzz word. It is a determining factor to the success of any team whether in corporate America, education, sports, music, or military. For the Lamar Band program to have a successful school year, we need to have grit. With classes starting, we have more obligations than we did during marching band camp. Now students must balance. Now students must manage their time and work hard every day on math, science, English, all other academic courses, as well as band! My advice is to stay ahead and never get behind. Ask for help! We have student leaders in band who are excellent tutors. We still have a lot of music, drill, and choreography to learn for the marching band show. We have football games, marching contests, and many other important events. The marching season intensity increases as we head towards October. Once we get to November, it quickly becomes much less of a time commitment. Ask upperclassmen students and parents, October is fun but busy! Let’s continue this incredible energy as we start school on Monday. Remember, Viking Fight Never Dies! A great saying that sounds a lot like grit to me.
Thank You – I can not begin to express how thankful I am for the parents and students who have helped with the move back to Lamar from Nichols. It has been a VERY busy last couple of weeks. After 4+ hours of work Saturday, the band room is now functional for classes on Monday. We still have a lot of work to do. I anticipate it being a multi-month project to really get the band room organized exactly like I want it. That being said, we are very thankful for the upgrades and excited about the future.
Saturday August 24 – This upcoming Saturday, we have rehearsal, our uniform fitting, and shoes & glove sizing and students will take the shoes and gloves home with them after they are fitted by our supplier. It is a big important day for many reasons. We start practice at 9:00am. Students should be to the band room by 8:45am at the latest. We will take a lunch break from 12:30 to 1:30. Students may bring their lunch, have lunch brought to them at 12:30 or leave campus for a quick lunch.

VikingFest – On September 4th at 6:00pm, plan on attending VikingFest! This is a great annual Lamar HS event that is THE opportunity to learn about the many incredible clubs and organizations at Lamar. The Lamar Band Booster Club will be selling a lot of vintage and NEW spirit wear. Please swing by and check it out.
Game Day – Yes, it’s almost time for the first football game of the season. This year, every game will kick off at 7:00pm instead of 7:30pm. Meaning the school songs will be at approximately 6:45pm. This is going to create a big challenge arriving to away games on time considering the amount of time it takes to load equipment, travel as a convoy in traffic, and to unload everything when we arrive. The booster club is working on providing a meal option for students so they can stay on campus after school. It would cost approximately $5 per student. Details coming soon.
School Supplies – Here are some of the items that band students will need. Mechanical pencils, a 1” three ring binder for music, sheet protectors, a box of reeds, valve oil, and other equipment specific items. Brass and woodwinds must also purchase a flip book and lyre from the music store. https://goo.gl/WZ4yzs You may need to take your instrument to a music store so they can help you acquire the correct size / brand of lyre (the attachment that holds the flip folder). You will need a total of at least 10 flip book pages.
After School Rehearsal – We begin our after school co-curricular rehearsals. These are mandatory and absences will be considered in the class grade. We will rehearse 3:30-6:00 on Monday & Thursday, and 3:30-6:30 on Tuesday. Students must arrive at least 15 mins early and stay approximately 15 after to do their job moving equipment to and from our rehearsal area. Parents/guardians, make sure to schedule doctors appointments on Wednesday afternoons. We will rarely have practice on those days. Check the Lamar Band calendar for any unusual weeks where we must adjust the schedule. SAT & ACT test dates to avoid – Band students must plan around the fall marching contests for their standardized tests. We have a marching contest on the Nov. 2nd SAT test date. DO NOT TEST THIS DATE! The national test dates are on the band calendar. Please make sure and avoid conflicts. To learn all the other options for testing, google search the ACT or SAT test dates.
Physicals & Forms – All band forms are due. The most critical is that the medical authorization form being notarized. You must have an ID and wait to sign when you are with the notary. All other forms must be completely filled out and signed before turning them in. Physicals are past due and mandatory for students to participate in band.
