Band Camp – What a week! The directors had an extra stressful week this past few days as we moved back to Lamar. The students have been fantastic and worked very hard. We made great progress despite the change in rehearsal space all week. We still have a lot of unpacking and putting things in their correct place. With all the changes to the room, that is a big challenge. We are determined to have it all cleaned up and ready for the rest of camp and first week of classes. This upcoming week the directors have many district mandated meetings so practices are in the afternoon/evening much of the time. Thursday is a full rehearsal day and Friday morning and evening. Please make plans to bring family and friends to the exhibition performance and ice cream social this Friday at 8:00pm, Cravens Field (LHS Stadium).
Every practice is mandatory for all Lamar Band students. Student summer jobs are not excused. Family vacations are excusable if a parent contacts a director ahead of time. However, students will be very far behind after missing any portion of these practices. We will have as many as 12 instructors teaching during the camp. We have spent money to hire experts in marching, color guard, drumline, and brass/woodwind to train our students. The staff will assign primary performer spots based on ability and attendance. Students with a secondary performer spot will work to earn a primary spot. Every student will participate in every part of practice.
Photos – We will take section photos for the Lamar football program on Monday afternoon during masterclasses. No special dress code, just look nice.
First week – The first week of classes starts on August 19th. We will continue to have marching band practice but we will shift to our typical schedule of Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday afternoons. I say typical because there are weeks in which I must alter the normal schedule. Please just check the google calendar regularly. I am including the set up time for rehearsals in this years schedule. UIL allows for scheduled set up time outside of the “eight hour rule”. I want students to be accountable for their part of the set up and putting away of equipment. Due to the fact that we have more props than ever before this year, all students have a job to do. It will be 15 mins before and after the actual rehearsal. If you have questions, just email me. Physicals & Forms – All band forms are due. The most critical is that the medical authorization form being notarized. You must have an ID and wait to sign when you are with the notary. All other forms must be completely filled out and signed before turning them in. Physicals are past due and mandatory for students to participate in band.
Band fees – The activity fee is $300. Band activity fees can be paid online at https://goo.gl/voPwBw
Drumline Update – Dr. Cavazos is requesting all HS drumlines and 10 leaders from each school to perform at the AISD convocation Monday, 7:30am. We are excited to perform and be the face of the Lamar band and AISD! The reward is completely new marching drums in the VERY near future!
