Band Camp – The first week of band is in the books. The staff had a meeting Friday evening and we all agree that we are in better shape this year than last year after the 1st week. The students worked extremely hard and didn’t let the heat and humidity bother them. We have music and choreography memorized for part 1 and the drill is well under way with the first 8 sets already learned. We learned to transport and set up the props for every practice. The next week’s goal is to learn the rest of part 1 drill and memorize part 2 & 3 music.
We have a challenge this week as we are moving back to Lamar. The teachers and staff are allowed back Thursday morning. I am still trying to work out the logistics with administration. We might need some help with this massive project. If so, I’ll send an email and/or Remind message. The contractor foreman gave me a tour on Friday and I am very excited for everyone to see the transformation of the band room. It’s pretty amazing. If you haven’t seen the pictures, check out this article about the Lamar Band on the AISD website. https://www.aisd.net/district-news/lamar-high-school-band-benefitting-from-summer-construction/
AISD will provide free lunch to all band students on Monday-Wednesday. Due to moving back to Lamar, we are not doing a lunch on Thursday and we are unsure of Friday at this point. If you wish, you may bring a sack lunch or have something delivered. The directors will be on campus during lunch and we strongly encourage each student to eat a big healthy lunch every day.
Every practice is mandatory for all Lamar Band students. Student summer jobs are not excused. Family vacations are excusable if a parent contacts a director ahead of time. However, students will be very far behind after missing any portion of these practices. We will have as many as 12 instructors teaching during the camp. We have spent money to hire experts in marching, color guard, drumline, and brass/woodwind to train our students. The staff will assign primary performer spots based on ability and attendance. Students with a secondary performer spot will work to earn a primary spot. Every student will participate in every part of practice.
Physicals & Forms – All band forms are due. The most critical is that the medical authorization form being notarized. You must have an ID and wait to sign when you are with the notary. All other forms must be completely filled out and signed before turning them in. Physicals are past due and mandatory for students to participate in band.
Band fees – The activity fee is $300. Band activity fees can be paid online at https://goo.gl/voPwBw
Drumline Update – We have been asked to perform at a couple of events in the next few weeks. Mr. Hagman and Ms. Brewer are having the drumline welcome back all the teachers this Thursday morning at 7:30am. Dr. Cavazos is requesting all HS drumlines to perform at the AISD convocation a week from Monday, 7:30am. We are excited to perform and be the face of the Lamar band and AISD! The reward is completely new marching drums in the VERY near future!
Jazz Update – Practice your all-state etudes.
Color Guard Update – Do your homework.
