Jazz Program – Viking Jazz had THREE festivals this weekend (yes, three of them) and had a lot of success! On Friday at the Coyote Jazz Festival, the Jazz bands learned about Jazz theory, attended a sight reading session, and attended master classes on their instruments. On the performance side both played extremely well with some Outstanding Individual awards! Josh S. was awarded an Outstanding Individual performer plaque for his drum set playing. Terrance L. was announced as the Overall Outstanding Performer for his alto saxophone performance. Mr. Riley was also named the outstanding Ensemble Director at the festival.
On Saturday both Jazz bands competed in the UTA jazz festival and did extremely well In a extremely tough field of bands. The Jazz Orchestra was 4th out of 8 and the Jazz Ensemble placed 4th out of 6 in their categories. Exauce Mpembe was named as an Outstanding soloist for his Bari Sax solo. Terrance L. was announced as the Outstanding Woodwind Performer for the UTA JAzz Festival which is a huge honor!
Saturday evening the Jazz Orchestra Performed at the Tarleton State Jazz Festival Awards Concert as the featured High School ensemble. They had a fantastic performance and they made it clear, That it Don’t Mean a Thing if it Ain’t got that Swing.
The Viking Jazz Band represented Lamar with class and pride. Mr. Riley is very happy with the strides the program has made this year and is extremely proud of the young men and women of Viking Jazz.
Winterguard – Lamar Blue had a terrific final performance of “Come Join the Murder” at the NTCA championship in Flower Mound. They had one of the best runs of the season with zero drops! We are very proud of these amazing young performers.
Parent Appreciation Concert – This Tuesday @ 7:00pm we will have a concert in the band room for all parents/families. This is an opportunity for students to perform their UIL music for their parents before we go to UIL next week. Students must arrive at 6:00pm to warm up.
We understand that it is difficult for parents to come out and support us at UIL since Symphonic Winds perform April 3rd at 9:00am and Wind Symphony performs April 4th at 1:10pm. If you can make it, we would be thrilled to have you there! If not, please come enjoy an up close and personal performance of our incredible UIL Concert Bands!
Spring Trip – The spring trip is just 3 weeks away! This Monday, March 25th at 6:30pm, we will meet in the Lamar cafeteria for a mandatory trip meeting. This is required by AISD. Students, parent/guardian, and staff will discuss the trip handbook, expectations, itinerary, and finalize rooming assignments / bus assignments. All students must sign up for the trip Remind service. https://www.remind.com/join/vfndpadre or just text vfndpadre to 81010
The final payment was due on March 1st. The balance of the account must be paid in full by March 25th. Students can pay with cash or money order. To pay by credit card, use this link – https://goo.gl/voPwBw
There is a service fee for using the credit card system. Payment plans are available from a band director. Payments can be made directly to the Lamar bookkeeper, Ms. Hancock 682-867-8326 firstname.lastname@example.org, or to Mr. Lang.
Pasta Palooza – Thank you to all that supported our Pasta Palooza fundraiser! We did better than usual bringing in $1900!
Sectionals – For details for Jazz or Drumline practices, contact Mr. Riley or Mr. Kelly. The full band rehearsals are more critical than ever as UIL is right around the corner.
Drumline Update – Drumline auditions start this week.
Jazz Update – Thank you parents for all your support this very busy week! Special thanks to Michelle Caldwell for donating her time!
Winterguard Update – From Midori – As we are wrapping up the end of both groups seasons, I wanted to share with you some highlights of our season so far:
*Our JV team for the first time ever has placed at a show in their class! We earned a third place at both the Wakeland and Azyle shows!
*Our Varsity team has won at two shows, Wakeland and Azyle.
*Our Varsity for the first time ever has placed at a WGI regional show, earning third place at the Dallas regional — super awesome accomplishment that only a few in our circuit have been able to accomplish.
*Both teams throughout the season have kept their rank in the top ten of guards in their class throughout the season in the NTCA circuit.
It’s nice to look at back at what we have accomplished so far and remember that we have one final push for the last weeks left in the season!
